Dear Friends,
Spring semester began at Case Western Reserve, Cleveland State,
and the other colleges we work with in Cleveland
a few weeks ago and classes resume at Oberlin this week. Oberlin had winter term during January. It is great having students back on campus as
they drive us to excellence. The student
staff partnership that is supported by our lay board of directors, alumni,
parents, friends, and other stakeholders is the key to our success and the
foundation for developing future leaders and participants in the Jewish and
general communities.
A few weeks ago we celebrated Tu B'Shvat, the Jewish New
Year for trees. Celebrating it in the
middle of winter reminds us that there is always potential for growth and renewal. It also gives us the opportunity to talk with
students about the issues of sustainability, care for the environment, and hope
for the future. Tonight we celebrate
Rosh Chodesh (the new month of) Adar I.
This year is a Jewish leap year so there are two Adar's. Purim is in about six weeks and Passover will
occur two and a half months from now.
Beyond the messages of fighting against tyranny and the responsibilities
that freedom brings, which are cornerstones of these Holidays, celebrating them
on campus creates community for students.
In essence that is what we are about, the opportunity for students to
develop their individual and communal Jewish journey. Students bring their perspective, learn from
one another and their teachers/mentors, and are exchanging views with many
others who present their opinions and ideas.
In doing so they hopefully understand that different perspectives and diversity
can make us stronger. This opportunity
does not only happen at Holidays, but it is part of all of our programs; Shabbat, Israel,
Tzedek/social justice, education, social, and cultural.
This report will focus on some
of our programs during winter break/winter session, the beginning of spring
semester for Cleveland Metro, and more details on our new summer
internship/summer programming initiative.
If you are interested in more information on any of our recent or
planned programs, want to become more involved, or have some comments feel free

Summer Internship Program
|
|
When students returned for spring semester we announced that starting this
coming summer,
through a grant from Strengthening and Growing Jewish Cleveland, we will be coordinating an innovative summer internship program. The program offers undergraduate students the
opportunity to work for eight weeks in Cleveland-area businesses and nonprofit
organizations.
The goals of the internship program are to stimulate interest in a career and
life in the Cleveland area, expose students to a
broad range of Cleveland opportunities, and increase understanding and interaction with the local Jewish
community. The interns will also be developing social and educational
programming for their peers who are back in
town for the summer.
We are still waiting to hear from other funding sources as
we hope that these summer programs become a dynamic part of our Hillel.
For more
information or to host an intern, please contact Ilana Shafran, Internship
Coordinator at ishafran@clevelandhillel.org
or 216-231-0040. Students can apply for the internship program on our website,
www.clevelandhillel.org.
