A Look at Breishit

By Gary Coleman

As you know this past Shabbat we started reading the Torah again from the beginning of Breishit. I want to share a quick thought with you that I think represents the work Hillel does on campus. The first two chapters of Genesis present two different stories of the creation of human beings. In the first chapter we are created in Gd's image seemingly destined for greatness. In the second chapter we are formed from the dust of the earth, alone, and it is unclear what will be our role or how we will live. I think that a reason for these two different perspectives is that we are being told it does not matter where you come from; each and every human being has tremendous potential. We are given intelligence and free will. Used wisely these can help us make the world a better place. But, if we use them incorrectly we will leave the world in a worse situation.

Hillel is uniquely positioned to play a vital role in this every day challenge as our mission is to enrich Jewish students so they can enrich the Jewish People and the world. Thanks to all of you we are successfully accomplishing this mission.
