Home Away from Home: Shabbat Dinner
$500 per Shabbat or $10,000 endowment
Picture Shabbat candles burning, welcoming the Sabbath bride, sharing wine and challah. It sounds like Friday evening in many Jewish homes. It’s also the scene at Cleveland Hillel Jewish Student Center in University Circle where Jewish students come to be part of a Friday evening celebration. Often there is singing, always there is laughter and friendship. Students have requested Shabbat dinner every week. We hope to bring them a weekly opportunity to gather, relax and celebrate.
Jewish Law Students ~ $10,000/year
Of all the graduate and professional students served by Cleveland Hillel, Jewish law students are by far the most engaged. Providing staffing for the Jewish Law Students Association, and speakers and food for programs is a key to connecting students to Jewish life in general and the life of Cleveland’s Jewish community in particular. These future attorneys are concerned about the issues of the day and are exploring, not only their career options, but how they can become involved in civic life. Hillel can offer a Jewish perspective on issues, introduce students to Jewish leaders and thinkers, and help students make connections within the Jewish community.
High Holiday Services ~ $3,600
High Holiday Services are one of the first opportunities for Jewish students to come together as a community to observe, reflect and celebrate together at the beginning of the school year.
Welcome Back BBQ ~ $1,000
At the beginning of first semester, Hillel welcomes hundreds of students for barbecued hamburgers and hotdogs with all the kosher trimmings. This is one of the first opportunities for Jewish students to meet new friends and greet old ones.
Hanukkah Party ~ $600
Taking the Hanukkah celebration onto the campus is a fun way to share this light-filled holiday with Jewish and non-Jewish students alike. Hillel provides menorahs and candles along with Hanukkah goodies.
