Summer Internship Program and Summer Events
This summer we were fortunate to develop an important new initiative to serve Cleveland based university aged students. Both an internship program that placed 23 students with summer jobs and social programs (there were 12 this summer) that started to meet the needs of the wide range of students in Cleveland during the summer were successful and will become a main component of Hillel in years to come. We look forward to the growth of both of these as they help us reshape the Cleveland Hillel Foundation from an academic year program to a twelve month program center.

Our summer program coordinator Ilana Shafran wrote the following about the internship program: A THANK YOU TO THE COMMUNITY This was the first summer of the Cleveland Hillel Foundation Summer Internship Program and it was a truly remarkable experience. Twenty-three outstanding undergraduates (22 from Northeast Ohio,) from universities around the Midwest, South, and East Coast, were placed at eighteen different businesses and non-profit organizations. They worked four days per week at their placements, and came together on Fridays to attend professional growth seminars, connect with the Jewish community, and explore Cleveland neighborhoods such as University Circle, Ohio City, Tremont, downtown Cleveland, and Lakewood.

I would like to thank the Cleveland Foundation and the Strengthening and Growing Jewish Cleveland initiative of the Jewish Community Federation of Cleveland for their generous support of this venture, and for the mentorship, supervision, and job placements provided by the following organizations: Brunswick Companies, NRP Group, Jewish Family Service Association, Envision Radio Networks, Jewish Community Center, Glenmede Trust Company, Titan Realty Group, Jewish Educational Center of Cleveland, Cleveland Medical Devices, Levin Consulting, Landmark Management, Gross Schechter Day School, Doner Advertising, Olympic Steel, Gross Builders, Jewish Community Federation of Cleveland, Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage, and the Cleveland Jewish News.

It is wonderful that our community could provide such a unique opportunity for its young people. It is our hope that they will return to Cleveland after graduation and help build their city! Because of the high demand and responsiveness of the students, we will need more job placements next summer. If you would like to provide a mentorship experience, please contact Ilana Shafran at 216.231.0040, or email ishafran@clevelandhillel.org

Dear Friends,

Fall semester 2008 is upon us. Case Western Reserve University and Cleveland State University plus other local colleges and universities started class on Monday. Oberlin College starts classes next week the day after Labor Day. It is a time of transition as new students begin their college career and other students continue theirs. Our Hillel will provide Jewish students the opportunity to learn more about themselves, how to interact and learn from one another, and the need to critically question as means to become better people. In this way we also facilitate the development of a pluralistic and respectful community on campus. In addition by providing meaningful Jewish experiences to students, they become more connected to the Jewish People and help improve the world. As a result, we are not only affecting Jewish students, but we are bringing value added to the entire campus community.

It is interesting that these beginnings coincide with the start of the Jewish month of Elul which precedes Rosh Hashanah. According to Jewish tradition this is the period that Moses received the second set of tablets from Gd. I think we can learn from this that we always have a chance for renewal and new understandings. We should know that we always have the possibility to improve and make things better.

This is the key to our work with the students. Through the student staff partnership we develop a series of events and programs that interest them and are a catalyst for more significant interactions. These events can be cultural, educational, religious, or social in nature and to be successful they need to be part of a continuum. But we know that students have different entry points and interests so our program has to have many different types of activities if we are to be successful. That is why we have Shabbat services and dinner, barbecues and movies, trips to Israel and social justice programs to name just a few of the opportunities.

Campus is an exciting place to be. It is where the future is developing. I hope these reports give you a taste for what we are doing on the campuses we serve.

As always I am interested in hearing from you, your comments, feedback, and ideas so you can either call me at 216-231-0040 or e-mail me at gcoleman@clevelandhillel.org

With Blessings,

gary sign
